Significant development occurred from the post-war years, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s, as the area became a popular tourist and retirement area. Rapid growth took place from the early 1990s, with the population doubling between 1991 and 2006, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly in Banora Point.
